What it’s like being a patient here

  • Pain free, with sedation if you want it

Pain control comes first and gets explained before it happens. Relative analgesia, oral sedation and IV sedation are all available.

  • Locals, visitors and seasonal workers

Families we have looked after for twenty years, alongside people here for a season or a week. No referral needed, and emergency slots are kept open.

  • Something to look at

The chair by the window looks out over Lake Wakatipu. The rest have a TV on the ceiling - Milford Sound one minute, downhill mountain biking the next, and off whenever you'd rather quiet.

  • Free parking, in the CBD

12 Lake Esplanade, on the lakefront, with free off-street parking for patients. In central Queenstown that is not a small thing.

nearly 25 years in Queenstown

Dr Adrian Paul

BDS (Otago) · Principal dentist · nearly 25 years in practice

“His near-painless injection technique alone is worth the drive.”

Adrian Paul has been treating patients in Queenstown for nearly 25 years, and is still the principal dentist, all these years, at Lakeside Dental Practice. That’s long enough to have watched dentistry change a great deal - and long enough to know which of those changes are actually worth keeping.

In practice, that means modern digital scanning and diagnostic equipment sitting alongside the kind of hands-on judgement you only pick up after decades in the chair. The equipment tells you what’s there. Experience tells you what it means, and whether it actually needs doing anything about - an accurate read of the problem, a plan that fits it, and no more treatment than the situation calls for. Just as importantly, nearly 25 years in the job means recognising the few situations that genuinely can’t wait, and moving quickly on those.

He’s still the kind of dentist who’ll happily explain why a technique has changed since he trained, if you’re interested - it’s clearly a job he still enjoys. Complex treatment gets explained in plain language rather than jargon, and there’s a gentle approach and sedation options on hand for anyone who needs a bit of extra help getting comfortable. Long-term patients tend to say much the same thing about him: he tells it to you straight, and that makes him easy to trust.

Plenty of Lakeside’s patients are tourists and travellers passing through, and it’s a fair question whether dental care in a small South Island town will meet what an international visitor is used to. Dr Paul’s answer is to let the work speak for itself: proper digital diagnostics, careful planning, and nearly 25 years of judgement behind every decision. He’s not going to tell you it’s world-class treatment - he’ll just get on with doing it properly.

How we work

  • 01

    Personalised care

No two mouths are the same and no two people want the same thing from a dentist. Plans are built around what you need and what you're comfortable with.

  • 02

    Effective solutions

We'd rather do the thing that lasts than the thing that's quickest - and where a cheaper option genuinely serves you better, we'll say so.

  • 03

    No surprises on the invoice

Examination first, then a written plan with costs, then you decide. If something changes mid-treatment we stop and talk to you about it.

I was SO nervous about getting my wisdom tooth removed, but they made the whole experience feel calm and safe from start to finish. They were incredibly caring, patient, and constantly checked in to make sure I was okay, which meant everything to me. The procedure itself was way smoother than I expected, and they explained everything so clearly, which really helped ease my anxiety. If you're scared of the dentist like I am - this is 100% the place to go.

I'm extremely phobic after a bad experience and as a consequence I had neglected some issues which had become exacerbated over time. I decided I would need sedation to fix my dental needs but no dentist in my own town used any form of sedation so I arrived here. You couldn't wish for a nicer, more knowledgeable, professional, patient and kind approach for a TERRIFIED patient like me. The first time I had oral sedation for all the preparatory work to be done so I don't remember much at all. It was completely painless. I 100% recommend Lakeside Dental and will never go anywhere else.

10 out of 10 for efficiency! Aussie tourist and Murphy's law tooth problem while on a 3 week holiday. Squeezed me in same day we called, no fuss, no mucking around, got in and got the job done better than any dentist i have ever been to.

It's been a month since my emergency root canal done by Dr Adrian and I want to sincerely thank him. I was in Queenstown for a company's convention trip and had a terrible toothache on the first night. Surprisingly the procedure was painless and I didn't even realised he gave me 2 Injections till I went back the following day to ask him. I was able to attend my company's dinner and was happily eating 2 hours after the root canal that my colleagues can't believed I just did a root canal.

Highly recommend the team at Lakeside Dental Practice. Both Adrian and Clare are extremely welcoming, professional, and put you at ease. There is no judgement at all, and an overall great experience.
