Dental check-ups and consultations

A check-up is the cheapest appointment you'll ever have, and the one that stops the expensive ones. It's a proper look at your teeth, gums and soft tissues, plus a clean and a plan if anything needs doing.

Dentist examining a patient during a routine check-up

What we do at a check-up

We examine every tooth for decay, cracks and wear, check existing fillings and crowns are still sound, and look at your gums for signs of gum disease. We also check the soft tissues of your mouth - cheeks, tongue, palate and throat - which is a routine part of any examination.

X-rays aren't taken every visit. We take them when there's a reason: to see between teeth, check around the roots, or follow something we're keeping an eye on.

Scale, clean and polish

Even with good brushing, hardened plaque builds up where a toothbrush can't reach. Removing it is what keeps gums healthy and breath fresh, and it's usually done in the same appointment as the examination.

You'll know the cost before we start

If we find something that needs treatment, we'll explain what it is, what the options are, and what it costs - before you commit to anything. Nobody likes a surprise invoice, and dentistry has a bad reputation for them.

Consultations & Check-Ups - common questions

How long does a check-up take?
Usually about 30 to 45 minutes including a clean. If it's your first visit with us, allow a bit longer - we'll take a full history and get a proper baseline.
Do I need X-rays every time?
No. We take X-rays when there's a clinical reason to, not as routine at every visit. Dental X-rays are low dose, but the principle is still to take them only when they'll tell us something useful.
Can I get a check-up if I'm visiting Queenstown?
Yes. We see visitors regularly. Ring 03 441 8248 and we'll find a time - and if something needs treating while you're here, we'll talk through what's urgent and what can wait until you're home.
